This is the story of Elroy Begay, a Navajo Medicine Man. The book is written by Albrecht as a partial biography which is intertwined with stories and lore as provided by Elroy. It is an important book as it shows that Navajo culture and ceremonies have not only continued but have been adapted for contemporary culture. The book details Elroy’s struggles not only with health and disability, but with darker times in his past as he travelled to accept his role as a Medicine Man. The book also details the incredible healings he has performed and the immensity of his faith an acceptance. Finally, the book details Albrecht’s journey to writing this book. She had to overcome cultural difference not only in living in the USA, but living with Navajo people. The book is an easy read and yet it is not because one has to lay aside preconceived ideas to garner greater meaning. I think it is a book that will provide me with epiphanies years after reading it. I think it is a must for anyone who has spiritual inclinations or just wants insights into another culture
